Survival Hiking Trip 4 Day
Difficulty: Intermediate
Event Description
In a survival situation, you don’t always have the luxury of hunkering down and enjoying the aloneness of the wilderness in a base camp. In fact, typically people will be on the move, either looking to rescue themselves because they are lost or retreating further into the wilderness to get away from it all.
In this course we will go over what basic equipment you should carry with you on a survival expedition. We will discuss basic fire starting, water purification, shelter building techniques and basic wilderness first aid.
During the hike we will only cover about 12 miles but it will be through some somewhat rugged terrain. We will not be hiking a well beaten path and will be traversing through private property. Expect to see few other hikers (if any) and no maintained trails. 12 miles is a short distance to cover over 4 days but we will also be focusing on learning skills and paying attention to our surrounds, not just through hiking.
We will start promptly so please arrive by 10:00 am. The first day we will start out by going over your gear, covering basic survival techniques, and going on a short hike to make sure you are comfortable. We will not be car camping so we encourage you to bring minimal gear but you may bring whatever gear you like. Once everybody is ready, we will pack up and head out to an undetermined location and set up camp.
The second day we will hike to our next location and set up camp. Along the way we will discuss wild edibles, navigation, primitive hunting methods and other survival tips.
Day 3 we will explorer, discuss and practice survival techniques.
Day 4 will break camp and hike out to return home.
Pack Weight: If you are not an experienced hiker, your backpack and gear should not be any more than 25% of your body weight. Please check your gear weight before arriving. Also keep in mind that we will be operating at an elevation of around 7,000 feet above sea level. If you are not used to this altitude, you will move slower and tire quicker.
Food and Water: You must pack your own food, water and cooking utensils. A Jetboil, BioLite or similar lightweight cooking stove is recommended but not required. A quality water filter is a must as we will be on the move and not at a base camp where you can easily fill your water bottle. We have WISE FOOD and/or Survival Cave Food meals that you may purchase if you notify us in advance; otherwise we recommend quick field expedient meals such as MRE’s.
Length: 4 days/3 nights
Minimum Recommended Equipment: We will not provide you with any gear and we will be camping overnight away from our base camp, so please come prepared. Fixed blade knife preferable a bushcraft style or other bushcraft knife, first aid kit, outdoor clothing, comfortable hiking boots, folding saw, paracord, overnight camping gear, sleeping bag and shelter (tent, hammock, tarp, etc…), backpack. Colorado’s weather is unpredictable and can snow even in summer, pack accordingly. Check Recommended Items List for more details!
